TYPHOON DAMAGE

Freighter Sinking

The 2351-ton Formosan freighter, Taitung, is reported to be sinking in typhoon-lashed seas 140 miles sonth-south-west of the southern tip of the island of Kyushu, Japan. The Maritime Safety Agency in Japan reported that a patrol ship was racing to aid the Taitung, which has a’ crew of 41 and six passengers on board.

Typhoon "Gloria,” the biggest typhoon so far this season. is whipping up huge seas in the rescue area as it heads for the heavilypopulated Chinese mainland. The typhoon’s impact is being felt over a wide area, with gale force winds encompassing a radius of sotne 190 miles.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency predicted the typhoon with maximum 144 m.p.h. winds at its centre, would probably hit the coastal province of Chekiank on the Chinese mainland late tonight. The Associated Press said the Philippines Government today rushed aid to more than 100,000 families stricken by the backlash of the typhoon, which left at least 15 persons dead in the Philippines.
