FLUORIDES IN WATER

Recommendation By W.H.O.

The World Health Organisation recommended exclusively the supplementing of water supplies with fluorides for mass prevention of dental decay, said Professor L. J. Baume, a Swiss dental expert and special consultant appointed by the organisation, in a statement in Christchurch yesterday. “None of the means of adding fluorides to vehicles such as tablets, salt or milk have proved to have the same efficiency in reducing the dental decay rate,” he said. Professor Baume said that Switzerland had recently introduced water fluoridation in two of its large cities. Alternative means such as fluoridation of table salt and school milk were only considered when it was not possible to add additional fluorides to the water supply. He said the W.H.O. recommended to government and health authorities who were seeking advice in specific health matters, techniques and procedures which, according to reports of expert committees, proved to be at the present time most beneficial, practical and safe.
