Better System Sought

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 10. The committee appointed to examine P.A.Y.E. would have its first meeting tomorrow, the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) said in Parliament today.

Speaking on the estimates for the Inland Revenue Department, Mr Lake said he was sure the committee would look into all the problems of P.A.Y.E. and give the Government some worthwhile advice.

Replying to a question by Mt M. A. Connelly (Opp., Riccarton) on the overestimate of tax receipts by £l6 million for the 1962 Budget, Mr Lake said one of the great difficulties under P.A.Y.E. was the estimating of receipts. This was one of the reasons the committee had been set up and it would help to ensure that estimates did not go so far astray. Mr Lake told Mr Connelly that the planning of the 1962 Budget had been undertaken in good faith and with the best estimates available. The £l4 million in tax concessions had been planned in the light of the estimates for income tax
