Ice-Skating PROVINCIAL TITLES

Young Entrants Impressive

The Canterbury Ice Skating Association held its annua) championships at the indoor ice rink, Centaurus road, yesterday. The present senior Neu Zealand title-holders, Miss W Grafton and I. McDonald, met with mixed success in defending their provincial titles. They won the dancing from D. F. Hewinson and Mrs Hewinson. but were beaten in the freestyle pairs by last year's intermediate champions. G. Glover and Miss S. Bayne. Miss S. Jack, after being down on the school figures, which provide 60 per cent of the total possible marks for the title, gave a fine free-skating performance in the afternoon, and won the women’s championship by a narrow margin. McDonald retained the men's title for the fifth successive year, but Glover, recently promoted from the intermediate ranks, was never far behind The outstanding competitors in the speed events were P Bastion in the intermediate and Glover in the senior. Bastion’s skating was particularly impressive. He is only 15 years of ■ age. but his times in the intermediate quarter-mile and mile were faster than Glover’s winning times In the senior.
