5.17 Pounds A Head (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. New Zealanders smoked 3,400,000,000 tailor-made cigarettes last year, Mr M. G. Williams, manager of a Petone tobacco factory, told the Wellington Rotary Club today. Including pipe and selfroll tobacco, total consumption was 5.171 b a head of population, he said.

The industry last year provided £16.5 million in excise and leaf duties, and gave employment to 1250 skilled workers and 2000 seasonal field workers. After a record harvest Last year of 9.3 million lb, more land was being prepared for tobacco cultivation. With the increase in leaf output there was an accompanying increase in quality, because of continued research in leaf care and cultivation. New Zealand recently won a trial export order to the .United Kingdom of 220,0001 b. •worth £45,000 to overseas earnings.

“Should we be successful in obtaining repeat orders, then such a venture would further strengthen the stability of the tobacco indus-

try, and make a-further creditable contribution to the country’s economy,” said Mr Williams.
