REPLACING DC3s

“Still Be Same Time” (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 27. Although the runways on all of New Zealand’s major air routes will be sealed by the end of this year, it will still be some time before the veteran Douglas DC3 airliners will be completely replaced by Fokker Friendships. The Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) explained this in Parliament this afternoon in reply to questions by Opposition members during discussions on the Estimates of the Civil Aviation Administration. Mr J. Mathison (Opp., Avon) a former Minister of Civil Aviation, asked what had been done to implement earlier promises to seal runways. He said that unless full use of N.A.C.’s Friendship fleet could be achieved, the economics of the corporation would be affected.

Mr S. A. Whitehead (Opp.. Nelson) asked when the Dakotas would be fully replaced by Friendships. Were there any plans to buy new Friendships? “I cannot say when we shall have an all-Friendship fleet." Mr McAlpine said. “We cannot do that until we have all sealed runways.” The National Airways Corporation had not ordered any more Friendships. Indeed, in order to achieve better use of the present fleet, the corporation was leasing one Friendship to Australia.
