SYRIAN BORDER
Warning In Israel (N.Z.P.A. -Reuter —Copyright.) JERUSALEM, Aug. 26. The Prime Minister of Israel (Mr Levi Eshkol) said today that if peace was not established on the Syrian border “the Israel Government is duty-bound and entitled, like any other Government, to take steps to defend itself.” He told a special session of the Knesset that Israel would act to safeguard its sovereign rights and meet responsibilities for the security of its citizens. Mr Eshkol told the Knesset that if the United Nations Security Council confined itself to a routine appeal for calm without clearly exposing the aggressor it would undermine Israel's faith in the United Nations. If peace was not secured the Government would be "duty-bound and entitled ... to take steps to defend itself under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter” which declared the right of membernations to self-defence. Teams of United Nations military observers today began inspecting the “defensive areas” and demilitarised zones along both sides of the Syria-Israel border, to see if either side was moving into these areas types of arms prohibited under the armistice agreement.
