Scheme For Lanes In Bealey Avenue
The City Council is considering tthe laning of Bealey avenue, but before it makes its decision it is seeking comments from motorists. The plan above shows what is proposed for the avenue. “To drive in lanes alongside other moving traffic is one of the lessons the 1963 Christchurch motorist must learn and for this reason alone it is desirable that we should have more laned roadways in the city,” said Cr T. D. Flint, chairman of the council’s traffic committee, yesterday. Members of the traffic committee had agreed unanimously that further investigations should be made on proposals for Bealey avenue but were anxious to ascertain motorists' reactions before proceeding further, he ■said. “The price that has to be paid for a first-class educational medium with a greatly-increased traffic flow
capacity and improved safety factors is the parking spare along tlie centre strip of tie avenue.” Cr. Flint said. "However, with the large amount of alternative parking aval table in the area, it s not expected that this will inconvenience anyone except those who are not prepared to walk even 100 yards." Three lanes were envisaged. The lane nearest to the median strip was for vehicles wishing to turn right, the middle lane for traffic going straight through, and the left-hand lane for left-turning vehicles and straight-through vehicles. The system was similar to that used in Moorhouse avenue, where motorists were becoming accustomed to driving in lanes and experienced little, if any difficulty in going straight through from two lanes, he said. Anyone interested in the Bealey avenue proposal was invited by Cr. Flint to write to the traffic committee.
