Yachting SOVEREIGN BEATEN

Difficulties Of Crew (N.Z.P-A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, August 24. Britain’s new Ainerica’s Cup challenger, Sovereign, was beaten by Sceptre, the defeated challenger in 1958. in the first of a series of races between the two 12metre yachts in Weymouth Bay. Dorset, yesterday. Observers said after that two factors contributed to Sovereign’s defeat. First, it lost ground with spinnaker trouble, and later it overlaid a mark. It was evident that Sovereign was the faster of the two boats to windward.

The New Zealand coal shovelling record was lowered at Waiouru on Saturday from 23min 34sec to 23m in 32sec by Barry Spitall, of Wanganui. The former record holder was Tom Tasker, a Wanganui coal merchant. Mr Tasker intends to make an attempt to lower the record when he recovers from a “particularly busy winter.”. Mir Sipitall said the cold weather might have aided him in his successful attempt to lower the record. The recordbreaking attempt created much interest in Waiouru—so much that a resident there is considering entering the competition.—(P .A.)
