HOSTEL FOR STUDENTS
Subsidy Of <£144,000 (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON. Aug. 26. A subsidy of £144,0D0 towards the building of a hall of residence at Ham by Christchurch College, the theological training centre maintained by the Anglican diocese of Christchurch, has been approved by the Cabinet. The buildings, which will house 120 students, will cost £258,000. Announcing the subsidy today, the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) said the amount of the subsidy represented the maximum of £l2OO a student payable under the recentlyannounced Government policy, which was aimed at encouraging the provision of halls Of residence at New Zealand universities by church and other interested organisations. “This hostel will be a very valuable addition to the facilities of the University of Canterbury at Ham and the Anglican diocese of Christchurch is to be congratulated on its enterprise,” Mr Tennent said.
A fossil forest which grew 150 million years ago has been discovered on the northern slopes of the Turkestan range in Uzbekistan.
