UNIVERSITY SALARIES

Delay To Review (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND. August 26. The statement by the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) in Parliament that the University Grants Committee now has university salaries under review is disputed by Professor L. W Crawley, chairman of the Auckland branch of the Association of University Teachers “nie Minister’s statement is contrary to the situation as described two days earlier by the chairman of the University Grants Committee. Dr Llewellyn, to the chairman of the Association of the University Teachers. Professor E. W. Herd,” said Professor Crawley today.

"Of this situation the Minister must surely have been aware. “The Grants Committee after promising an overdue review of university salaries early this year, is now abdicating its functions in respect of professorial salaries. These are to be considered by the Parliamentary advisory committee on higher salaries in the State services. “This committee, as far as we are aware, has not been finally set up. Professorial salaries are therefore not under review now by this or any other body. Sub-profes-sorial salaries, which are closely related to professorial ones, can hardly be under review independently.”
