DIVISION I FINAL
Rangers Take Untidy Game
Rangers emerged as winners of the first division knock-out competition when they beat Rlccarton, 2-0, in an untidy final at Macfarlane Park on Saturday. Careless passing by both sides spoiled what might have developed into an interesting match. There were talented players enough, but few occasions when the standard of play rose above mediocre. The experienced wing-halves. R. Durant and A. Inglis, gave Rangers an advantage in midfield play and this, combined with the determined play of the wings, R Creedy and D. Anderson, was the deciding factor.
S. McNaught, at outside-left in the first spell and outsideright in the second, was the only Ricearton forward who seemed capable of causing Rangers much concern, although the inside-left, M. Scriviner, tried hard throughout.
In goal for Rlccarton. P. Peacock made some excellent saves and always cleared the ball intelligently. He was well shielded on the left flank by the fullback, A. Hawthorn, who was the best defensive player on the day. Rangers scored first, after 25 minutes' play, when the centreforward, J. Sampson, chased a long pass to the goal line. He worked the ball nicely and sent a good cross to the head of Creedy, who nodded home. The second goal came two minutes after half-time. The inside-right, J. Ewart, made a clean through-pass to Anderson, who swerved around his marker and slammed a powerful shot past Peacock from close range. Mr W. Robinson was the referee.
