League MARIST NO MATCH

Linwood Gains Command

Superior fitness and excellent backing-up gave Linwood a convincing victory over Marist in the only local senior Rugby League match played on Saturday. A weakened Marist side did well to hold Linwood to 13-7 at half-time, but in the second half Linwood gained a monopoly of possession and eventually won, 28-12. Linwood’s strongest weapon was its backs. They handled well, ran hard and combined well. In the forwards Linwood also held the advantage, getting the ball away to the backs quickly. G. Clarke and R. Pounsford were the pivots of the side's attack and they gave their outside men good service from broken play. At full-back, W. Campbell continued with his run of good games. The Marist back-line did not have many opportunities, although one player who turned in an extremely good game was the full-back, B. Curtain, who was excellent on defence. H. Nepia looked the most likely scoring back. The pick of the Linwood forwards were J. Jones and J. Flanagan. Both backed-up very well and were constantly on hand to keep a movement going. K. Batten was another who backed-up well. None of the Marist forwards showed up particularly, the best probably being G. Cooper. He made two delightful runs, one of which resulted In a try. Tries for Linwood were scored by Batten (2), Jones (2). Clarke (2). Abercrombie (2), P. White kicked two conversions. Cooper and B. Morris scored for Marist. Nepia kicked one conversion and Curtain kicked one penalty goal and a conversion. The referee was Mr P. Yaxley.
