Doubtful Sound Names

Sir,—-A paragraph in your issue of August 19, headed “Spanish Names,” recorded that an expedition to Doubtful Sound in 1793 was “under the command of the Spanish explorer, Don Alessandro Malaspina.” Malaspina, in fact, was an Italian, bora at Mulazzo (Carrara) on November 5, 1754. He was one of thirteen children of Marquis Malaspina, and his birth certificate can still be seen in the parochial archives of MuJazzo. He was at Cadice (Spain) as an officer of the Spanish navy in his twenties and later was sent as chief of the expedition “to trace maps of the Spanish possessions.” The voyage of the two vessels, Descubierta and Atresida, under his command, lasted five years one month and 21 days. He died near Pisa on April 9, 1809, after a court case brought by the Spanish, whose accusations are still discussed among scholars. —Yours, etc., BRUNO BALLARA. Wellington, Aug. 21, 1963.
