TEACHERS’ PAY
Mr Nash On Claims (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug 22. The Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) tonight told Parliament that he was prepared to show the former Prime Minister (Mr Nash) a letter on teachers’ salaries which, he said, claimed the Labour Government would not increase their pay because they were paid enough already. Mr J. G. Edwards (Opp., Napier) had challenged Mr Tennent to produce any letter or document to support the claim he made during the second reading deba>te on the University of Waikato Bill. Later, Mr Tennent said this was not the first time he had been challenged to produce this letter. On an earlier occasion he had invited Mr Nash to come to his office and be shown the letter. "Tonight, I repeat that offer, ” he said. “If Mr Nash will make an appointment with me, I will show it to him.’’ Mr J. Mathison (Opp. Avon): All very sinister. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer): Why not read it out now? Mr Tennent said he did not have the letter with him, but the words in it were that too much had already been paid to teachers.
