Branding Of Foals
Sir, —Every decent person must have been appalled to learn of the brutality involved in the branding of foals. Now that your corre-
spondents have done their part by making known the facts, the remedy must be found. I join those who ask "Ex-Cavalryman” to republish his painless method, and urge with “A.C.M.” that all whose concern was aroused by these revelations support the S.P.C.A. by subscription and by publishing their views. I suggest, too, that New Zealand might well learn from overseas countries which lead in humane legislation notably Denmark. Could not inquiries be made as to the method of identification used in such countries? —Yours, etc., SMOULDERING. August 21, 1963.
Sir, —May I suggest that collection boxes for the abolition of fire-branding be placed in T.A.B. premises, to be used by the S.P.C.A. for that purpose? Surely the S.P.C.A. needs more members, especially those who in their private lives apply their kind feelings in practice. Hare coursing and live pigeon shooting were abolished by the close cooperation of humane societies, individuals, and the S.P.C.A. under the able leadership of Miss Mabel Howard. Let us undertake the task, even if equally arduous, of replacing the present method referred to above by a better one.— Yours, etc., DO UNTO OTHERS. August 21, 1953.
