RECITAL IN CATHEDRAL

Te Wai Pounamu Girls The girls of Te Wai Pounamu College gave a short recital in Christchurch Cathedral yesterday afternoon. The programme consisted of action songs, an example of the use of the single short poi, a lament, and two hymns. These girls sing extremely well, with smoothly produced voices of pleasing timbre, and excellent sense of rhythm which seems to be bred in them, and with expressive shadings in wellshaped phrasing. Their precision is remarkable, particularly as there is no formal conducting to keep them in line. Movements of hand and arm in the action songs were graceful and expressive. The songs were well awav from the beaten track, and one designed for teaching vowel sounds was particularly delightful. In the hymns there was good balance in the part singing. —C.F.B.
