CRITICISM OF A.S.R.S.
“Two Sets Of Rules” It appeared that there were two sets of rules for the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants—one for ordinary members and a different one for executives, said a former branch chairman (Mr G. Finlayson) yesterday. Mr Finlayson was commenting on a statement by the present chairman (Mr T. Sweeney) that the Registrar of Industrial Unions had rejected a protest made by Mr Finlayson and 12 other branch members against alleged irregularities in the election of a branch secretary. “A witch hunt has been conducted for some months in an attempt to stifle criticism of the present regime,” Mr Finlayson said. “It has been reliably reported from former high officials of the branch that they have been told even their telephone conversations have been recorded and also that other threats have been made. “I have made it clear in the past that there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing so far as the returning officer for the election (Mr A. Cairns) is concerned,” he said.
