Police Inquiries Into Shootings
(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, August 19. Lute today the police still refused to name a third person believed to have been involved in the fatal shooting in Timaru on Friday. Kevan Russell Denley, aged 21, a clerk, and Frank Shields, aged 52, a merchandise traveller, both employed by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., at Timaru, died in separate shootings within half an hour.
Detective Chief Inspector W. H. A. E Hollins head, also of the C. 1.8., Christchurch. Inspector Sharp is in charge of the inquiries which he said, were still being made
Inspector Sharp was not prepared to discuss the possibility of a person being charged in connexion with Mr Denley’s death. He said his only concern "at this stage” was to clear Mr Shields’ name. His memory should “remain unsullied.” Messrs Denley and Shields died from bullet wounds in the head. Mr Denley died in a storeroom of the company’s premises about 11.45 a.m About half an hour later Mr Shields was found dead in a motor-car in Centennial Park, a reserve on the outskirts of the city's western boundary.
