REBUILDING PROPOSED
J. Ballantyne And Co. J. Ballantyne and Company, Ltd. proposes to reconstruct the basement and ground floor of its building at the corner of Colombc street and Cashel street, the City Council was advised last evening The building wae destroyed by fire in 1947. but was renovated. To comply with street-widen-ng requirements, the Colombo street frontage would be set back seven feet, the town-planning committee said. The architects for the company had said that along the full length of the Colombo street frontage were heavy concrete and brick basement walls, foundations and floors and solid blocks of shop ingoings of the former three and four-storeyed buildings They wanted tn know whether the foundations and basement waUs would have to be removed. On the recommendation of the committee, the council required the company to •ake down the existing basement walls for a depth of three feet below ground level to allow for possible future underground services.
