WARNING BY CORONER

Safety With Heaters

(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, August 19 The Hastings District Coroner (Mr W. S. Sheppard) today emphasised the importance of taking adequate safety precautions with heaters and fireplaces when there were small children in 'lie house. The Coroner, who was completing an inquest into the death of Wendy Anne Braddock, aged seven months, found that the child died on June 4 from severe shock brought on by extensive body burns and the inhalation of fire fumes, after the home of her parents caught fire following the ignition of a kerosene heater. “While I do not wish to cast any reflection at all on Mr and Mrs Braddock, this sad tragedy does accentuate the need for constant vigilance where young children are near kerosene heaters, fireplaces and open electric heaters.” the Coroner said “Safety devices are available and should be used."
