MAORI WARS MEDAL

Discovery In “Junk” (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 18. A Maori Wars campaign medal, awarded to New Zealand’s first Victoria Cross winner, Major Charles Heaphy, has come to light iin New Plymouth. It was found in an old box of trinkets by Mr Peter Holmes, engineer to the Taranaki Harbour Board. Mr Holmes, whose wife’s family is distantly related to Major Heaphy, intends to present the medal to the Auckland Museum, which already has Major Heaphy’s Victoria Cross. Mr Holmes said yesterday that the box of trinkets w r as among some “old family junk” brought from Auckland some time ago.
