SUPPORT FOR Y.M.C.A.
Generous Gifts In U.S. The way in which the public and big business supported the Young Men’s Christian Association in North . America was commented on by Mr T. Tweed, general secretary of the YMCA in Bendigo, Victoria, in an address to members of the Y’s Men’s Club on Saturday evening. Mr Tweed, who has just returned from representing New Zealand and Australian Y.M.C.A.’s at Buffalo, U.S.A., said large sums of money were given to the Y.M.C.A and firms sometimes give complete buildings. Clubs taught archery, horse riding, swimming and physical education, and camps were held similar to the one at Wainui, Banks Peninsula. Another feature of the work in America was the formation of Y’s Menettes’ Clubs, said Mr Tweed. These clubs are formed by the wives of Men’s Club members. The first one in New Zealand was formed in Christchurch a short time ago. The funds for Mr Tweed’s trip to America came from the sale of used postage stamps. The Christchurch club collected about 60,00 stamps, which were sold ir America.
