DAVIS CUP ENTRY
Disappointing Result The result of New Zealand's first entry into the Eastern zone ol the Davis Cup competition this year was in some ways disappointing, according to the annual report of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association The report says entry in the Eastern zone was advocated by some enthusiasts for a number of years on the score that New Zealand would have a reasonable chance of reaching at least a zone semi-final. “The result should, however, have driven home a fact which has not generally been understood—that is. that because of New Zealand's isolated position and the inevitable necessity of playing Davis Cup matches on foreign courts, where al! the advantages are with 'he home team. New Zealand would have to field a team considerably better than the opposition to have a / chance of winning against almost any Davis Cup nation whether in the European. American or Eas:ern zones "This year’s team was a very good one. but it fell victim to the same problems encountered by teams in other years, not the least problem being that the Philippines produced a team which would have been difficult to beat on any courts.” the report says
