ART GALLERY REBUILDING
Lottery Grant Sought The Canterbury Society of Arts has applied to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Sir Leon Gotta) for financial assistance from the Golden Kiwi lottery funds for rebuilding its art gallery in Durham street Its application was supported by the City Council last evening. Before he left flor overseas, the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) wrote to the Minister saying that the replacement of the gallery was a necessity and that he would like to see a new building in the area to harmonise with the proposed civic centre. With a grant and/or a towinterest loan from the Arts Advisory Council, the society said it could rebuild in an imaginative way. There was no conflict between the society’s gallery and the Robert McDougall and its policy, it said. The two supplemented each other in their cultural interests and pohciee.
