SCHOOL DRAMA CLUB

Three-Act Play Presented Christchurch West High School is already well known for successes in producing the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan; and it is a matter of some interest that drama is also taking a place in the life of this school.

Until this year, only minor productions have been attempted. “Sailor Beware,” which was presented in the school assembly hall last evening, is a three-act play, and is therefore a sign of the progress the Drama Club has made. All those taking part have profited by previous experience, and “Sailor Beware” was capably acted. The producer is Robert Russell, who also takes the part of Pa Homett in the play. His achievement in both fields is a considerable one. In fact, his direction of “SaUor Beware” would be creditable to a much more mature producer.

Of course, Emma Harnett is the character who must be considered first in this play Naturally Jeanette Burness did not have the imposing style that is usually expected; but she acted with spirit ai d created a commotion that made up for want of stature. Ann Morrow was also good as the nervous Edie Hornett; and Jill Fright and Lindsay Campbell, as Shirley and Daphne respectively, looked attractive, but did not always impress as being perfectly at ease on the stage. On the other hand. David Eddy and John Knowles, as the two naval ratings, acted with considerable assurance The characters were defined, and Carnoustie Blight’s type of humour was clearly conveyed to the audience. Other pleasing performances were given by Linda Bell and Stephen Tozer. In it hoped that “Sailor Beware” will be the first of many presentations by the Christchurch West High School Drama Club. —C.E.S.
