ARRESTS IN TURKEY
Secret Raids In Two Cities (N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) ISTANBUL. August 19 Troops and police in Turkey have arrested 40 persons in secret raids in the last 24 hours, sources said last night, the Associated Press reported. Twenty-two persons were arrested in Istanbul and 18 in the capital, Ankara, the sources said. The raids, which began late on Saturday night, were carried out under the authority of Turkey’s martial law command. Many of those arrested were reportedly members of the Turkish Labour Party, a small splinter group which is not represented in Parliament.
Turkey has been under martial law since May 21. A former Army colonel. Talat Aydemdr. then led an abortive coup d’etat aimed at overthrowing Ismet Inonu’s Government.
