COLOMBO STREET
Discussion On Bus Stops The possibility of moving bus stops in Colombo street and reviewing timetables for the street during the peak hours of 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. would be discussed with the Christchurch Transport Board and the Tramways and Public Passenger Transport Authorities' Union, the works committee reported to the City Council last evening. The committee was commenting on suggestions by Cr. N. G. Pickering to improve the flow of traffic in Colombo street south at peak hours His suggestions were made after the council, at its last meeting, had rescinded its decision on a parking ban at peak hours. The suggestion that all intersections not light-control-led should be controlled manually had already been implemented, the committee said. On the suggestion that right-hand turns be permitted only at manually-controlled intersections, the City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) had reported that the implications were considerable and until a better knowledge of traffic volumes and flow was available there was little information on which to base a recommendation. Universitystudents would be engaged during the holiday for a peak hour traffic-counting programme. Major traffic hazards caused by the double parking of goods service and private vehicles had been considered, the committee said. The Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) had been instructed to report to the next four meetings of the committee the number of offence notices issued to drivers for this class of offence.
