INFORMATION REFUSED

Applications For Deportation (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 16. Lawyers in Auckland were perturbed at the Labour Departments refusal to give information when deportations were being sought or both sides of the story when deportations were ordered, said Mr R. J. Tizard (Opposition, Otahuhu) in Parliament today. He said a recent case where a United States citizen was prosecuted for overstaying his permit period had disclosed a serious loophole in the law. It appeared he was able to stay. On the other hand at Auckland recently, the Minister had ordered the deportation of a British subject who had overstayed his three-months’ permit It was true complaints had been made about this man’s behaviour but he had been deported without a hearing.
