Tarmine Impressive In Hunt Cup Win

“The Press" Sveciai Service DUNEDIN, August 18. The Waimate-owned and trained Tarmine scored his first win as a steeplechaser when he recorded a most impressive performance to win the Otago Hunt Club Cup, the feature jumping event at the Otago Hunt’s annual race meeting at Wingatui on Saturday. Trained by R. P. Langford for Mr C. E. Leighton, Tarmine was ridden by E. B. Skelton.

Tarmine won the Otago Hurdles at the Dunedin winter meeting in June, but he had little experience over country.

On Saturday, he was at the rear most of the way and apart from making a mistake at the stand double with a round to go he gave a good display of jumping. It was not until the home turn that he appeared to have a chance of featuring in the finish. He moved up smartly to follow Tidal Rip and King Pickle over the last fence. Tidal Rip took the lead from King Pickle at the half-mile and appeared to have the race won when he was four lengths clear early in the run home, but Tarmine wore

him down to win by a length and a half.

King Pickle was two lengths back third with threequarters of a length to the well-supported Port Lanyard, which raced without dash and was never in a challenging position. Bayline, Dark Jester, Drum Major, and the early leader. Arctic Star, came home at intervals clear of the favourite, Grand Monarch, which was always well back. First Win Tom Dooley, an aged gelding by Columcille, scored his first success when he won the B. S. Irwin Steeplechase, for amateur riders. He made most of the pace, jumped confidently, and had too much stamina for his 10 opponents. He was ridden by his Gore owner, Mr J. G. P Kelly, who also trains him. After being a failure on the flat. Tom Dooley was purchased ait hack price by Mrs Joan Benson, of Dunedin. A short time ago she made a present of the horse to her daughter and son-in-law. Tom Dooley was the early leader and after the stand double was a length clear of Hunted, with three lengths to Chartlea Park and four lengths to Hygeana and Simplex. Tom Dooley was eased in the back straight. where Hunted took over the running, but Tom Dooley dashed clear again soon after and from there on never appeared in danger of being caught. He coasted home nine lengths clear of Chartlea Park, with a length and a half to Hygeana. There were eight lengths to Delayed Action, which beat Simplex byhalf a length for fourth place Cascalho. Dazzling Fox. and Surhine came next, and Ei Toro was last. Hunted lost his rider at the last fence when second and Rang! Aroha. which was ait the ’ear throughout, was pulled up.
