Branding Of Foals

Sir, —It is time the S.P.C.A. did something to stop the barbarous practice of firebranding foals. According to regulations, I had to have an exceptionally showy colt branded. It was done a month ago by a veterinarian and the burns inflicted still need regular attention and treatment. This foal would not eat, and could take only very short steps when walking for several days. One leg swelled from the poison of the burnt, decaying flesh. According to the present rules this foal must be branded again as the first brand is indecipherable—as if he has not been disfigured and maimed enough. Another foal done at the same time has to have attention three times daily still. We must have fire-branding abolished. —Yours, etc.. A. M. A. ENGELBRECHT. Waimate, August 15, 1963
