Two Tries For The South Island

THE CENTRAL PART played by E. W. Kirton, the South Island first five-eighths, in two of South’s tries against North at Lancaster Park last Saturday is clearly shown by the magic-eye camera sequences of the movements. AT LEFT: Taking a long pass from the half-back, C. R. Laidlaw, at top speed, Kirton has run wide to avoid the No. 8 forward before passing to D. A. Arnold and then doubling round behind Arnold to take the ball again. However, Arnold has been tackled immediately and has passed the ball back to Kirton, who, still running wide, has kicked the ball for J. G. Allison’s wing. It turned

out to be a perfect movement, for Kirton had drawn in the North right-wing, M. J. Dick, and Allison was able to take the ball on the full and score in the corner as Dick and D. B. Clarke closed in on him. RIGHT: Receiving the ball again from a line-out, Kirton has sidestepped the North flanker, W. J. Nathan, and then, darting outside again, has widened the gap by running outside J. F. McCullough. Stopped from linking up with his centre, I. S. T. Smith, because of the North backs running between them, Kirton has flung a pass over their heads to P. J. Morrissey who, catching it one-handed, has sprinted for the line well clear of the opposition.
