Big Seed Production
IfORE than Im lb at turnip and swede seed was produced in Otago and Southland this year. This repressers more than three times the estimated production and means that no seed will need to be grown next season in he two provinces, which produce ail of New Zeeland's requirements of Governmentapproved seed. Farmers throughout the country have relied on Otago and Southland to produce seed for these important winter feed crops since 1939, when the outbreak of war farced England to prohibit exports. Between 150 and 170 tons of seed is handled in an Inveroa>rgill store annually and packed into 21b bags flor distribution. It is very difficult to regulate production of the seed, as the season plays an extremely important part Yields vary from 3cwt to 18cwt an awe, while fanners’ demands for different varietiec change from year to year. The firm which handles the seed budgeted for 300,0001 b of seed this year, whereas the actual harvest was more than Im lb.
