CARTERTON DOUBLE

Gallant Lady, Gayestephan “The Press" Special Service •WELLINGTON, Au*. 16. Several promising young gallopers will reappear at tne Carterton meeting tomorrow, after spelling dunnq the winter. Their performances could throw considerable light on early spring events. The TAB. double events, the Carterton Racing Club Handicap and the Taratahi Handicap, have drawn even fields, and as there is good representation of recent form, betting is likely to be well spread. A likely combination Is Gallant Lady and Gayestephan. both of which raced well at their last starts. Gallant Lady has not-raced since the final day at the Wellington July meeting, when she finished second in the Winter Oats Handicap. She adopted her usual role of pacemaker and it was only in the last half furlong that Kumal got the better of her.

Others listed which are in good form are Good Samaritan, Bagush. Top Lad. and Voltaire. In spite of his rise in weight and an extra furtong to cover, Gayestephan should make his record two consecutive wins in the Taratahi Handicap. Last week at Hastings he resumed after a spell and won the Ashcott Handicap, six furlongs, after leading throughout. Tyrol and Big Mac could be the danger for Gayestephen. Another feature will be the New Zealand Hack Stayers’ Plate, one mile and threequarters, in which Fleeting Moment Is expected to repeat his last-start success at Rlocarton. The track was heavy early In the week, but the weather has been mainly fine and the going should be no worse than soft. Selections:— 11 a.m. Dalefield Hack Hurdles: All Cackle, Deflation.
