SELLING OF APPLES
Other Growers’ Views
Most Canterbury fruitgrowers were quite satisfied with the present scheme administered by the Apple and Pear Board, and opposed a self-determination apple and paar sobotne which had been proposed by the Canterbury Fruitgrowers’ Association, said the president of the Waimairi Fruitgrowers’ Association <Mr J. L. Stead), and the president of the Lobuirn Fruitgrowers’ Association (Mr C. M Turner) in a joint statement yesterday. They were commenting on a statement in “The Press" on Tburdiay by the aecre’ ary of the Canterbury aosoriation (Mr A. Lauder), which said that his association wanted the right to sell through the markets.
The Canterbury association was only one of three, and its members were limited mainly to the Papanui area, said Messrs Stead and Turner. They supplied only a small percentage of Canterbury’s annual total of about 200.000 cases of apples and peens.
“This is an attempt by a minority group to alter regu’atiohs which are acceptable to growers in the areas which produce most of the crop. One orchard in Loburn alone produces about 35.000 cates annually.” they said. Under the present scheme, a grower was allowed to sell up to two caees of this fruit to a customer. Both the Waimairi and the Loburn association had no wish to alter this arrangement.
