Maude Wins

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Aug. 16. Mr Angus Maude today held the Strat-ford-upon-Avon seat for the Conservatives in a by-election caused by the resignation of the. former War Minister, Mr John Profumo. Mr Maude had a majority of 3470 votes. Mr M. Blair and : Javid (“Screaming Lord”) Sutch lost their deposits. The voting was: Mr Maude, 15,846 votes; Mr A. Faulds (Labour). 12,376; Mr D. Mirfln (Liberal), 7622; Mr Blair (British and Commonwealth Party), 281; Mr D. Sutch (National Teen-Agers), 209. Mr Profumo held the seat in 1959 General Election with a majority of 14,129, The total electorate is 52,357.

Today’s figures show that about 69.36 per cent went to the polls as against 76.84 per cent at the General Election, when the electorate was 49,660, with only two contestants.

“This is a tremendous result for Labour,” said Mr Faulds. “The eyes of the country and indeed the whole world have seen Stratford demonstrate the feeling of the British people that the Tories should get out and that Macmillan should call a general election.”
