Protests At U.N. Team

Thirteen Chinese were a-rested and several slightly injured in clashes with police during anti-Malaysia demonstrations against the arrival of the United Nations Malaysia assessment team today. Several persons were slightly injured as they resisted police taking away their anti-Malaysia banners e long the road and later as they gathered outside the hotel where the mission is staying. Some of the banners said: “We want independence, not Malaysia:” "The Alliance Government are not the true representatives of the people;” and “We do not want rule from London and Kuala Lumpur " A police spokesman estimated the crowd of demonstrators along the roads at "between 3000 and 5000.” The mission is led by the deputy-director of the United Nations Office of Personnel. Mr L. V Michelmore. whose deputy is Mr G. Janecek. of Czechoslovakia. One United Nations Secretariat civil servant each from Pakistan Japan. Ceylon. Argentina. Ghana. Jordan and Brazil comprise the rest of the mission. In addition to cheeking whether Malaysia was a major issue in Sarawak and North Borneo elections, the team will see if electoral registers were properly compiled. if elections were free and without coercion, and if votes were properly polled and properly counted.
