AMBASSADOR NAMED

Retired U.S. General (N Z. Press Association) WELINGTON, Aug. 16. The United States Embassy announced today that President Kennedy was nominating General Herbert B. Powell to the Senate for confirmation to serve as Ambassador to New Zealand to succeed Mr A. B. Akers, who will leave the Dominion on August 25 to assume an important post in the Administration. The Ambassador-designate is aged 60. He retired m February after 33 years' service with the Army. During World War II he was Chief of Staff of the 75th Infantry Division during three campaigns in Europe He was in command of the 17th Infantry Regiment in Japan when war broke out in Korea, and he took part in the Inchon landings. General Powell is descended from Welsh settlers who arrived in Virginia during American colonial days Before joining the Army he graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science degree He is an active army pilot His hobbies include fishing, flying and music. He has published numerous professional articles. General Powell visited New Zealand in 1961 for the

Coral Sea celebrations in Auckland, when he was Commanding-General of the Continental Army Command. He commented at the time that the ties between New Zealand and the United States went deeper than the military alliances in which the two countries were associated.
