Lake Manapouri

Sir,—Mr Mirsky, of Bechtel Corporation, refers to the Manapouri development of 700,000 KW, 200,000 for the grid and 500,000 for Comalco. Evidently the Government intends to raise both Manapouri and Te Anau to the limit to obtain maximum power. This decision is based on two ideas, both false. First, that the aluminium industry would be highly profitable to New Zealand. The Government has never produced figures to support this, yet it intends to give Comalco power at a much lower price than it is worth to the grid. The second false premise is that raising the lakes would give very cheap power. The power would be very cheap up to perhaps 600,000 K.W without raising the lakes. The extra power got by raising the lakes and flooding park land estimated to be worth £3O million, they pretend is cheap by assuming that this land is worth nothing whatsoever. It belongs to us all.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR LUSH. August 15, 1963.
