HIGH SCHOOL ENROLMENTS
256 Fail With First Choice
Only 256 applicants were refused entry to the school of their choice in the Christchurch post-primary enrolments for 1964. This is regarded as an acceptable proportion in the total enrolment figure of 3600. Christchurch Girls’ High School. Christchurch Boys’ High School, and Shirley Boys’ High School were the only schools which had to refuse pupils in any number.
After the first enrolments had been made there were still seven Christchurch schools with vacancies, and all headmasters were informed of existing vacancies. The extra 256 pupils have all now been placed.
Headmasters adhered firmly to their statement that applications made in duplicate to more than one school would be refused by both. The Education Department believes that the post-war population bulge is almost catered for in New Zealand school accommodation. There will be a drop of about 100 in enrolments for 1965, and a similar drop in 1966. In 1967 and 1968. a large standard HI population will begin high school, and figures will rise by 300 and 200 respectively in those two years
