14 Fined At Akaroa

Fourteen of 19 persons whose names were taken by the police when they raided the Madeira Hotel, Akaroa, on the night of June 29, were convicted by Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., at a sitting of the Akaroa Magistrate's Court. Each was charged under the new Sale of Liquor Act with being in a bar or bar lounge after hours, and with consuming liquor after hours. They all pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate said he found It hard to believe evidence that those who claimed that patrons were their guests were prepared to buy them liquor all night. The licensee of the hotel at the time of the raid. William Keith Grant, was convicted and fined £l5. on a charge of selling liquor after hours. He pleaded guilty through Mr R. J. de Goldi. Charges of opening for safe, exposing for sale and of allowing consumption of liquor otherwise than as part of a meal were withdrawn.

Olive Heatherdell Brown, a general at the hotel (Mr de Goldi), was convicted and fined £4 on a charge of supplying liquor. The Magistrate entered the conviction, and on the first charge fined each of the following £3, and on the second charge £2: Evelyn Kotlowskl, Carl Thomas Bunker. Colin Allan Charles Bichan, Stanley Pimm, Robert Jess Campbell. Milton Wright, Ernest Leigh Langrope, Bernard Shakleton Smith. Kathleen Winifred Newton, Thomas Alexander Robinson, John Drummond, William Henry Robinson. Robert Nicol and Robert Malcolm Moffet.

Space Woman.—Valentina Tereshkova, the woman astronaut, will visit Czechoslovakia this week, her first visit to a foreign country since her space flight in June. —Prague, August 14.
