ONLY CAR LEFT
House Gutted By Fire (N Z Press Association) ROTORUA. Aug. 15. “Now all we have left is the car.” said Mr Joe Smith this morning as he surveyed the fire-gutted remains of his stucco house on the Lake Rotorua waterfront at Ohinemutu. Just before 5.45 a.m. Mr Smith barely escaped the inferno as he woke his five children, including a yearold baby son. and guided" and carried them from the blazing house.
Mrs Smith, night supervisor at the Rotorua Hospital nurses’ home, was due to come off duty in an hour’s time when she heard the siren and asked another woman “I wonder where the fire is?"
Possibly the luckiest member of the family was 13-year-old Patrick. The closed door of his bedroom stopped the full force of the flames before the boy was wakened by Mr Smith. The house, a six-room dwelling, was more than 20 years old. The brigade had the outbreak under control in 10 minutes, but the damage had been done.
Practically nothing was saved and nothing was insured.
