(New Zealand Press Association)
PALMERSTON N„ Aug. 15. The degree of efficacy of a mixture of phenothiazine and nicotine as an addition to stock licks for breaking the life-cycle of parasitical worms in sheep was debaited in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court this morning. A company known as Agricultural and Livestock Services, Ltd., of Christchurch, appealed against the Stock Remedies Registration Board’s refusal to permit its sale on the grounds that it was of no value and did not comply with the standard laid down by the board. The appellant chose Palmerston North as the venue of the appeal because most of the farmers who would
appear as witnesses were in this district.
The appeal was heard before Mr D. G. Sinclair, S.M, Counsel for the Crown was Mr A. J. Quill, of the Crown Law Office. Mr A. D. Holland (Christchurch) appeared for appellant.
The appellant company has for some years been supplying a Palmerston North distaiibuting company with the mixture for distribution to farmers at their own request Evidence was given that implied permission to do so, in order to test the results, had been given by the Minister of a previous Government (Mr C. F. Skinner) and by a former DirectorGeneral of Agriculture (Mr P. W. Smallfield).
Farmers gave evidence of benefits received by their sheep through the use of a mixture of phenothiazine and nicotine (tobacco-dust), when mixed with salt from a loose stock lick in a covered box. Their evidence was followed by a oontaadiiicitory opinion by a former director of the Animal Research Division of the Department of Agriculture (Mr J. E. McHwaine). The first of the evidence tor the board had been given before the Court adjourned until tomorrow.
