(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 15. The Dairv Board was completing negotiations with a number of North Island dairy companies to divert milk from cheese-mak ing to the manufacture of other products, said i rh airman (Mr A. Linton) today.
The diversion, which ii being arranged with the concurrence of the Government, is expected to result in the making of about 12,000 tons less cheese during the season than would otherwise be produced. The reduction is about 12 per cent. Mr Linton said the move was necessary in order to prevent an undue accumulation of stocks of cheese on the United Kingdom market. The switch would result in the best balance of manufacture. designed to yield the maximum return to the industry and to the country The arrangements involve the diversion of approximately 100,000 tons of milk from cheese factories in Taranaki. South Auckland and Wellington in the 196364 season. The milk will be sent by tankers to factories producing butter and cream, or butter and skim milk powder. Approximately 6000 tons more butter will be made from the milk diverted, and associated quantities of casein and milk powder. Reductions in cheese manufacture are being arranged to the extent of 5000 tons in Taranaki. 3500 tons in South Auckland and 3500 tons in the Wellington district. “These arrangements offer a clear-cut illustration of the high degree of organisation of the dairy industry today." said Mr Linton. "They Show how the integration of the activities of the board and of the dairy companies is used to set the course in manufac- ■ ture that commercial judg- • ment indicates is the rignt one.”
