Measuring Width Of Tasman

[NZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, August 15 Foar American distance measurers arrived in Sydney today to measure the distance between Australia and New Zealand. They are members of the United States Army, who arrived in the United States survey ship FS2I6 with an astronomical telescope and tuning devices ' At present, the precise dis-

tance between Australia and New Zealand is not known and only a calculated estimate is available. But now. through astronomical observations carried out simultaneously m New Zealand and Australia, it is hoped to obtain the precise distance.

Observations also will be carried out, in the next year, to ascertain the distance between Australia and Fiji. Mr R. T Wyatt, chief of the occultation branch of the United States Map Service

(Far East Branch), who met the ship today, said the readings were part of a 12-year scheme, which began in 1955 “The team will be here until the end of October and will return again next January for a further 18 readings." he said. “They will take three readings between now and October near Canberra, Port Macquarie, and Casino.

“We don’t know the distance between continents, and this is the purpose of our programme” Mr Wyatt said.
