RESISTANCE IN CUBA

U.S. Setting Up Network (N.Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 The United States Government was working actively to set up a strong underground network in Cuba, the Washington “Post” reported tonight. The newspaper said that trusted Cuban exile agents, cash, arms, and other equipment were being smuggled into Cuba, with arms being buried for future use.

The “Post” said the Central Intelligence Agency and other groups had, been engaged in the new operation since May or June. It was hoped that the underground operations would eventually overthrow the Cuban Prime Minister (Dr. Castro). The “Post" said that underground activity is being organised under the C.I.A. United States authorities were reported cracking down on similar efforts by various exile groups, in order not to jeopardise the Government’s efforts. At the time of the disastrous invasion of Cuba in April. 1961, the United States was criticised for failing to establish an efficient underground in Cuba, while relying too much on the invasion itself to topple Dr. Castro.
