SATURDAY BUNS

New Service Begun Mr T. Whittle, who is the proprietor of the Akaroa Bakery, said that he was now operating a Saturday bun service to 60 corner stores in Christchurch and suburbs. He said that he began the service three weeks ago, and had no connexion with Kenneth Douglas Shaw, known to about 50 Christchurch shopkeepers as the “Saturday bun man.” Mr Shaw has not been seen in Christchurch or the suburbs since early June. His service to shopkeepers ended at that time, and about 50 cheques for approximately £lO each which he cashed with shopkeepers were subsequently dishonoured. “I am running the Saturday bun delivery service on strictly legitimate lines. It is a good, worthwhile business, with honest profit in it because the master bakers do not bake on Friday nights,” Mr Whittle said. "I have received some abuse from shopkeepers who have thought I was mixed up with Mr Shaw. I decided to start the delivery service my. self after Mr Shaw disappeared only because I considered it would be a good business, run along proper lines.” Mr Whittle said that he and his wife had been running the Akaroa Bakery for about 12 months. He would extend his Saturday bun service to Christchurch shops until he could handle no more customers. When that stage was reached, he would consider whether he should get someone to help him expand the service further.
