Waimakariri Bridge

Sir, —Regarding the decision of the North Canterbury Catchment Board on the length of a new bridge over the Waimakariri, I would draw attention to the unwisdom of confining rivers and streams to too narrow limits. I have photographs showing three washed-out bridges. The Ashley river bridge on the North road was built at the side at a narrow part. The photograph shows a section of the original roadway before the bridge had been raised on account of the shingle that had accumulated underneath. That wash-out was on the north approach. The Stoney Creek bridge on Marshman’s road, between Ashley and Balcairn, was 30 feet in length. It was replaced with one 100 ft long. The Kowai river bridge was broken by a tree that had been washed down. In all wash-outs the bridges and approaches had been too narrow to withstand the rush of water. —Yours, etc, R.H.J.
