A man was sent to gaol for 14 days when he told the Magistrate that he could not guarantee that he could get a job. Thomas Shearer, aged 42, unemployed, had pleaded guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient means of support on August 13. Semior-Sergeent G. M. Cleary said Shearer was found by a constable sitting on a rubbisn tin in High street st 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday. “If you are not prepared to help yourself I don't think there is any point in fining you.” the Magistrate told Shearer.

RESTITUTION ORDERED K. C. King was ordered to pay £26 restitution to the New Zealand Post Office for damage he did to a Post Office cable. King did not appear. OPENED SHOP ILLEGALLY After pleading guilty to a charge of failing to close his shop at 261 A Cashel street on Sunday, June 16, Harold Gunn, a grocer, was convicted and fined £3. PARENTS FINED The following were fined for failing to send their children to school: Mrs J. Bourgeois, £10: Mrs J. P McAlleer, £3: J Nicholls, £3; Clyde Wyse Smith, £1 10s. REMANDED After pleading not guilty. Kevin John Peter Duncan, aged 18, was remanded in custody to appear at Invercargill on August 21. on a charge of receiving a radio valued at £9 when he knew it to be dishonestly obtained on August 11. Woolf, Justices of the Peace) COMMITTED FOR TRIAL William Leslie Campbell, aged 31, a painter and paperhanger, was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in Christchurch on a charge of assaulting a female. Pamela Dawn Hillier, a police constable, on May 11. Campbell, who pleaded not guilty and eleeted trial by jury, was represented by Mr A. Hearn. Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary prosecuted. The charge arose out of a dispute over the use of a telephone box at the corner of Christian street and Aorangi road. Evidence given by Hillier that she had resigned from the police for health reasons.
