CAPE TOWN MEETING
City Geologist To Attend
Mr Guyon Warren, a Christchurch geologist, will give a paper at an international conference in South Africa next month.
The paper will be one of eight New Zealand papers presented at a symposium on Antarctic geology at the annual conference of the Special Committee on Antarctic Research. The com-
mittee was set up by the International Council of Scientific Unions, and meets once a year to co-ordinate scientific research in the Antarctic. The co-author of Mr Warren’s paper is Mr G. W. Grindley, of the Geological Survey, Lower Hutt. Mr Warren will be the only New Zealander at the conference. The fact that eight New Zealand papers would be read at the symposium was evidence of the large part played by New Zealand in Antarctic research, said Mr Warren.
Mr Warren spent 14 months in the Antarctic from 1956 to 1958 as a member of the Transantarctic Expedition, and Mr Grindley has been in Antarctica since then. The Transantarctic Society set up as a result of the expedition has built up funds from the sale of its book, film showings, and other activities, from which a grant has been made towards the cost of Mr Warren’s trip to South Africa.
The symposium will be held in Cape Town from September 16 to September 23. Mr Warren will leave Christchurch on Tuesday and plans to return to New Zealand by way of Britain and forth America, arriving home about mid-October.
